The IAQG aerospace quality management standard — the entry requirement for every serious aerospace and defence supply chain in the region, from EDGE Group and Strata Manufacturing to Saudi Aramco's aviation fleet and SAMI joint ventures.
AS9100 Rev D is built on ISO 9001 and maintained by the IAQG — a consortium including Airbus, Boeing, Safran, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, and GE. It adds the requirements for aerospace manufacturers, MRO organisations, and defence supply chain companies supplying regulated aerospace programmes: counterfeit part prevention, configuration management, First Article Inspection, FOD prevention, and operational risk management. In the UAE, EDGE Group's 25+ subsidiaries and Strata Manufacturing require it from their supply chains. In Saudi Arabia, SAMI's international defence JVs bring IAQG quality requirements into the Kingdom.
Every AS9100 certificate must be registered in the IAQG OASIS database. Aerospace customers check OASIS to verify that a supplier's certification is current, covers the correct scope, and was issued by an IAQG-approved certification body. A certificate from a non-IAQG-approved body, or a certificate not visible in OASIS, will not satisfy an aerospace customer's supplier quality requirement.
Regulatory and Legal Compliance — UAE
| Regulatory Framework | How This Standard Applies |
|---|---|
| GCAA (General Civil Aviation Authority) | GCAA regulates all civil aviation activities in UAE. AS9100 is the QMS standard for aerospace manufacturers supplying into GCAA-regulated aviation systems and supplier qualification programmes |
| EDGE Group Supplier Qualification | EDGE Group and its subsidiaries (Caracal, HALCON, Barij Dynamics, etc.) require AS9100 certification from supply chain as a baseline QMS standard for aerospace and defence manufacturing |
| Strata Manufacturing Supplier Qualification | Strata, an Airbus and Boeing aerostructure manufacturer, applies IAQG quality requirements to suppliers providing materials, components, and services |
| Emirates Engineering and Etihad Airways Engineering | Both airline MRO operations apply AS9100 requirements to supply chain partners providing component repair, overhaul, and manufacturing services |
| Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) | Global lessor headquartered in Dubai with extensive technical operations and supply chain requiring aerospace quality standards |
Regulatory and Legal Compliance — Saudi Arabia
| Regulatory Framework | How This Standard Applies |
|---|---|
| GACA (General Authority of Civil Aviation) — Saudi Arabia | GACA regulates civil aviation in Saudi Arabia. AS9100 is the QMS framework for aerospace manufacturers and MRO organisations in the Saudi civil aviation supply chain |
| SAMI (Saudi Arabian Military Industries) | SAMI's joint ventures with BAE Systems, Leonardo, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and others require AS9100 from Saudi supply chain partners |
| SAEI (Saudi Aerospace Engineering Industries) | SAEI provides MRO services in Saudi Arabia — its quality management requirements align with international aerospace standards including AS9100 |
| Saudi Aramco Aviation Fleet | Saudi Aramco's corporate aviation fleet maintenance and supply chain requirements align with IAQG quality standards |
Where This Is Most Relevant — Key Locations
| Location | Industry / Application Context |
|---|---|
| Abu Dhabi — Mussafah, ICAD, KIZAD | EDGE Group subsidiary operations, manufacturing companies supplying Abu Dhabi aerospace and defence programmes, Strata supply chain |
| Abu Dhabi — Al Ain (Strata Manufacturing) | Strata's aerostructure manufacturing facility; approved supplier base; composite components manufacturers |
| Dubai — JAFZA aerospace and defence manufacturers | JAFZA-based aerospace component manufacturers, avionics repair stations, and maintenance service providers |
| Dubai — Dubai Aerospace Enterprise | Global lessor with extensive technical operations and aerospace supply chain |
| Saudi Arabia — Riyadh (SAMI headquarters and JV facilities) | Defence manufacturing JVs, military aerospace supply chain, SAMI headquarters operations |
| Saudi Arabia — Dhahran and Eastern Province | Saudi Aramco corporate aviation fleet maintenance and supply chain |
What the Standard Requires
| Requirement Area | What It Means in Practice |
|---|---|
| Counterfeit part prevention (CSUP) | Documented programme preventing counterfeit parts from entering the supply chain — receiving inspection, documentation verification, suspect part reporting |
| Configuration management | Changes to approved design and production configuration formally controlled throughout the product lifecycle |
| First Article Inspection (FAI) | First production items verified against design requirements before volume production proceeds |
| FOD prevention | Foreign object damage prevention programme in all manufacturing environments |
| Operational risk management | Risk management applied to production operations — not just strategic business risk |
| Key characteristics | Product features whose variation significantly affects safety or performance — controlled with statistical methods |
Why Nathan ISO Consulting — What We Do Differently
Nathan ISO Consulting builds AS9100 systems that satisfy both the certification auditor and the supply chain audit conducted by EDGE Group, Strata, or an international prime contractor. Too many AS9100 implementations are ISO 9001 systems with aerospace language added — they pass the certification audit and fail when an aerospace customer walks through the door.
| What We Do Differently | How It Benefits Your Project |
|---|---|
| We read your customer flow-down requirements first | EDGE Group flow-down clauses, Strata material specifications, and international prime quality requirements are reviewed and incorporated before implementation begins |
| We build CSUP prevention that aerospace customers accept | Counterfeit part prevention is the primary differentiator between credible AS9100 systems and paper exercises. We build programmes that airline and defence customer auditors can verify |
| We prepare for OASIS verification | Correct scope wording, IAQG-approved certification body selection, and OASIS registration — we manage all three to ensure the certificate is correctly established |
| We have GCC aerospace supply chain project experience | Our aerospace knowledge comes from real UAE and Saudi aerospace supply chain projects, not from reading standards |
Frequently asked questions
EDGE Group subsidiaries, Strata Manufacturing, Emirates Engineering, Etihad Engineering, and international prime contractors operating in the UAE all require AS9100 from supply chain partners.
IAQG's Online Aerospace Supplier Information System — the global database of certified aerospace suppliers. Aerospace customers verify certification in OASIS. Registration is mandatory.
Three to five months with a well-resourced project team. Counterfeit part prevention, configuration management, FAI, and FOD prevention are genuine additions.
A part fraudulently misrepresented as conforming to OEM specifications. In aerospace, counterfeit parts have caused in-flight failures. AS9100 requires documented prevention programmes.
A structured review of the first production item verifying all engineering design requirements are correctly implemented before volume production proceeds.
Foreign Object Damage/Debris — substances alien to the product that could cause damage. AS9100 requires documented FOD prevention in all manufacturing environments.
The formal discipline of tracking and controlling a product's physical and functional characteristics throughout its lifecycle — essential for 30+ year aerospace asset lives.
Yes. SAMI and its international JV partners bring IAQG quality requirements into Saudi Arabia. AS9100 is the QMS baseline for most defence manufacturing supply chains.
Yes. AS9100 includes all ISO 9001 requirements and adds to them. Some organisations certify only to AS9100; others maintain both where they serve aerospace and non-aerospace customers.
Requirements flowed down from customers (EDGE Group, Strata, Aramco aviation) that must be identified, documented, and maintained in the QMS. A systematic identification process is required.
